Dr. Bernard Herman

Professor of American Studies & Folklore  | UNC - Chapel Hill, NC

In addition to being the George B. Tindall Distinguished Professor of American Studies and Folklore at the UNC, Bernie also serves on the art history faculty. He has published essays, lectured, and offered courses on visual and material culture, architectural history, self-taught and vernacular art, foodways, culture-based sustainable economic development, and 17th- and 18th-century material life. His essays on food and food cultures have appeared in Saveur, Organic Life, Gravy, and Southern Cultures. His 2012 Thanksgiving essay for Saveur was anthologized in a collection of the year’s best food writing. His current book project, The South You Never Ate, will be completed in 2018.
